Gosling nets his first Cherries goal as AFCB progress in Cup

AFCB have not had particularly great runs in the cup competitions of late so I hoped that the game against Exeter in the first round of the Capital One Cup may see a change in fortune. Apparently the Cherries had not won away in the capital One Cup in their last seven attempts!

The Cherries made a complete team change from their last game against Huddersfield and with full competitive match first team debuts for Baily Cagill and Dan Gosling it promised to be an exciting night with many players who have played for the first team in the Cherries line up. It was particularly pleasing to see Darryl Flahavan back on the pitch along with Elliott Ward who was captaining the side, but I was also amazed to see the quality that was on the bench of the Cherries needed it.

Sadly, as an Exile I could not tune into local radio and have not signed up to player this season so it was watching out for tweets, AFCB blog and news over the Internet as the match progressed.

Brief Match Summary
AFCB dominated the first half with Stanislas, Pitman and Freaser looking very likely to score, but they could not get a lead. Pym made some excellent saves while Junior stanislas hit the post and Elliott Ward had a header cleared off the line. At the other end Baily Cargill and Darryl Flahavan had little to do in the first half as Exeter did not manage a recorded shot and did not win a corner. At half time AFCB had controlled 68 per cent of the play, according to the BBC and had 11 shots but only 2 on target.

It took until 54 minutes before the Cherries got the break through. A cross from Stanislas was converted into his own net by Scott Bennett. Midway through the second half Dan Gosling got his first Cherries goal and doubled the lead. While Exeter came more into the game in the second half they could not beat Darryl Flahavan in goal and the Cherries were able to see out the game 0-2. Junior Stanislas was man of the match by all accounts as he was involved in both the goals. Baily Cargill also received lots of plaudits on his competitive debut.
